Goodnight did not push, and Billy did not lay himself bare. It wasn't how they worked. So much of Billy's past was still a deliberate mystery, but he wondered, sometimes, if Goodnight knew more about his past than he had ever let on.

They rose from the piano. Billy took the candle from Goodnight and gave him a slow, soft kiss, almost chaste.
